Building environments for pupils to thrive

Creating education spaces that enable students to thrive is the top priority of any school or education provider.

Sometimes, particularly on estates with older buildings, it can be difficult to see how modern, functional buildings would fit in with the current aesthetic, whilst also delivering the sustainable modern facilities that are needed.

Not only this, but schools face additional challenges due to ensuring site safety – as well as the need to increase capacity quickly – often leading to tight build deadlines between term times.

Combining heritage exteriors with modern techniques

Modular buildings, whether permanent or rental, have a huge part to play in improving education estates up and down the country. These modern buildings can be designed to suit a range of requirements – both internally and externally – ensuring the new facility will blend in seamlessly with the existing campus.

We delivered a visually stunning addition to Leeds City College’s grade II listed campus – creating a three storey, permanent structure that is as impactful on the outside as it is functional on the inside.

Including the latest in sustainability must haves, such as PV solar panels and air source heat pumps to ensure the building is fully electric, this design demonstrates that practicality and aesthetic design are a match made in heaven.

Manufactured offsite, modular buildings are quick to install and reduce the risks surrounding pupils coming into prolonged contact with an operational building site.

Designing adaptable spaces

School buildings are required to accommodate many different needs, including providing inclusive, supportive environments for students with special educational needs. Modular buildings excel here – creating bright, airy spaces, from expansive classrooms to double-height assembly halls that cater for every student.

That’s just what we did at Brambles School, which urgently needed a high-quality hire building to support its students as they waited for the permanent academy to be built.

In just eight weeks we delivered a high-specification, purpose-built therapeutic environment that rivalled any permanent facility, with dedicated sensory areas, bespoke toilet facilities and landscaping, including a canopy for the play area.

At Hills Road Sixth Form College, we delivered a three-storey permanent facility to enhance the institutions’s student offering. With a modern rock panel facade, this building has a contemporary feel that blends seamlessly with the rest of the campus.

The modern interior includes dedicated special educational needs and disability provision across the top two floors and accessible features such as a Part-M-compliant lift that services the entire building. Installed in just seven days, this building is a stylish and practical addition to the campus. With a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’, it will stand the test of time.
