Client & Project Team Testimonials

Mike Woodruff, Associate Director, Mace Group Ltd

Very good service, from pre-construction, right through to delivery and installation. Good working relationships were formed on site between Premier Modular and the Mace site teams, which was key to maintaining safety and efficiency for our construction site.

BRIEF

Manchester Airport – the UK’s third largest airport – is transforming into a global gateway to meet the evolving needs of its passengers and airlines, as part of a huge £1bn redevelopment project.

The complex scheme, being undertaken by Mace Group Ltd, includes a series of enhancements, including the extension (+150%) and reconfiguration of the existing Terminal 2, along with associated developments of the airfield, aircraft stands, new piers and forecourt areas and multi-storey car parks. This requires 148,000 sqm of new taxiway and apron, representing one of the biggest construction programmes to date in the North of England.

Over the course of the two-year project (2022-2024), there will be approximately 1,200 people working on site, and Mace needed to support these – to ensure seamless project operation throughout – with high-quality onsite office and welfare facilities.

The offsite solution

Premier designed, delivered and installed four temporary buildings, offering 2,000 sqm of first-class office and welfare facilities for the site’s construction team.

The high-quality buildings offer a superior internal environment, enabling workers to relax in large, spacious (2.7m ceilings) rooms and offices. All of the units are fully air-conditioned, with PIR lighting throughout.

The facilities provide onsite teams with premium welfare facilities, including toilets, locker rooms and canteens.

Building one: (1,500 sqm) – main site office.

Building two: (72 sqm) – security unit

Building three: (110 sqm) – East service yard welfare

Building four: (250 sqm) – SVCC welfare

PROJECT CHALLENGES

Minimal disruption: The main challenge was ensuring minimal disruption, as the airport and runways remained active throughout.

For one building in particular, which is situated airside, that meant Premier needed to ensure limited crane heights and there was also restricted transport access.

To ensure seamless delivery, within the project’s timescales, Premier worked extremely closely with the client, planning ahead and ensuring good communications channels at all times.

Reduced daylight hours: Due to the time of the install (December 2022), daylight hours were reduced – so the Premier team needed to streamline the install process, as well as working weekends, to keep to schedule.

Additional access restrictions: There were also issues with site access, due to transport restrictions on the motorways around Manchester. This meant careful logistics and planning were key throughout.
