The Brief
As part of the Hospitals Transformation Programme, Shrewsbury Hospital appointed Vinci Construction to build a new four-storey building expansion to improve healthcare facilities. The new building is planned to include new emergency care services, as well as women’s and children’s and critical care wards.
A high-quality, temporary welfare facility was also needed, away from the hospital, to accommodate the needs of the onsite construction team.
Premier Modular was appointed by Vinci Construction to deliver a purpose-built modular welfare solution that would provide essential employee facilities throughout the duration of the hospital expansion project. The building design needed to meet sustainability requirements and operate on self-generated energy.
The Building
The 1,195m2 four-storey modular welfare unit, designed with 32 modules and a 2.7m ceiling height, delivered a seamless blend of functionality and comfort for workers.
Each floor was designed with employee welfare in mind; the ground floor provided essential facilities including toilets and well-equipped locker areas, and the first floor featured a modern canteen with a fully operational commercial kitchen. The top two floors offered versatile corporate workspaces, including meeting rooms, office areas, a kitchenette and a welcoming reception.
Meeting sustainability goals
To meet sustainability goals specific to the hospital site, the team were asked by Vinci to ensure that the building followed specific environmental considerations to meet their company targets, for example the building needed to be self-sufficient in terms of energy generation.
These goals were met using solar PV units on the roof of the welfare building, with generated energy being fed directly back into the building’s operations. The roof featured three units of solar PV, covering over 100 square metres.
