The Brief

With vital repair works being made to the main building, Redruth and Camborne Hospital urgently needed to add a temporary stroke ward to their facility. The Trust was looking for a fast-track, full-turnkey solution to provide immediate interim care for existing patients without compromising on quality as construction work on the hospital took place – approaching Premier Modular as the experts to deliver this.

We were appointed to build the modular stroke ward, consisting of 20 beds, to provide a fully operational ward with a quick turnaround. This solution not only saved valuable time, but also minimised disruption to ongoing patient care, ensuring that essential services remained uninterrupted. We utilised existing relationships to subcontract trusted partners, providing a quality building from all aspects of the supply chain.

As a stroke ward, the project required complex, bespoke elements. To ensure the internal environment met the complexities of the hospital’s requirements, bespoke elements were added to our rental modules to create a purpose-built modular solution. Unlike standard B2-rated cladding, Isoclad firestop panels were selected for their fire-rated properties and non-combustible classification. These panels are particularly suitable for high fire-risk areas, thanks to their exceptional fire resistance and non-combustible mineral fibre core. By incorporating these advanced materials, we ensured that the ward not only provides a safe environment for patients but also meets the high standards of durability and efficiency required in modern healthcare facilities.

Premier Modular worked with all partners to fast track the initial elements of the project, including liaising with stakeholders to finalise the mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) design, which usually takes four weeks, in just four days to meet the urgent demand for space for patients.

Sustainability benefits

The new ward combined the bespoke nature of a permanent building with the cost and sustainability benefits of a rental building, aligning with the NHS’ net zero targets.  Choosing a temporary building meant that the Trust received a building built in a controlled factory environment, resulting in enhanced thermal efficiency and air permeability that exceeds building regulations.

The building’s potential to achieve a circular economy, due to its recyclability, combined with our factories being zero waste to landfill means that the temporary ward contributes lower operational and embodied carbon.

CHALLENGES

The delivery of modules to site required extreme planning as a result of Cornwall’s road restrictions. The installation took place over Easter and faced challenges including road closures and major roadworks. Premier Modular worked with delivery partners and the local police to ensure that the modules arrived precisely on time for installation.

Strong wind during the installation period provided further challenges, and due to safety concerns, the onsite cranes were out of operation for two of the allotted ten installation days. However, by maintaining excellent communication between teams, we were still able to install the facility in just six days ready for internal final fit out.

The facility

The one storey stroke ward provides much needed support to individuals who have suffered from a stroke in Cornwall. It includes:

  • Reception and lobby
  • Four wards
  • Day lounges
  • Meeting rooms
  • Quiet area
  • Private rooms with en-suites
  • Physiotherapy gym
  • Offices
  • All necessary M&E and clinical equipment storage.

To enhance the experience for patients, an enclosed walkway was added to the design of the facility that connected to the existing building to maintain the flow of the hospital.
