Getting to know our compliance heroes

You know the saying: ‘not all heroes wear capes – sometimes they work at a modular building company in Yorkshire’. Okay, maybe that’s not quite it, but we are fortunate to have the best in the business leading our teams and helping to drive first-class compliance at every level of the business. But who are some of these mystery faces behind the mask, and what do they have to say about compliance at Premier Modular?

How do you uphold compliance at Premier Modular?

Nathalie Meunier, sales director: “We all have a part to play when it comes to maintaining a high level of compliance – whether that’s adhering to a client’s design specifications or ensuring our workplace exceeds health and safety regulations.

“In our work for the health sector, regulatory compliance is vital for safeguarding staff and patients. For every hospital and healthcare building we deliver for the NHS, we meticulously follow the service’s Health Technical Memoranda and Health Building Notes to ensure the building continues to be a safe, clinical environment for years to come.”

Annelee Roscoe, ESG and HR director: “As the strategic lead of Premier Modular’s ESG commitments, it’s my job to ensure the company stays on track with its pledges and, crucially, the government’s policies to decarbonise all UK sectors and achieve net zero by 2050.

“This duty has seen me drive the introduction of our new fleet of electric forklift trucks, implement a unique ESG category into our employee performance contracts and lead the company to become the first non-financial firm in Europe to earn ESG accreditation from external auditor, SGS.”

Darren Brooks, head of technical and design: “It’s easy to think that compliance is simply about sticking within the guidelines of building regulations or ensuring health and safety protocol is followed. Of course, these things are incredibly important, but so is adhering to our own standards of quality control and ensuring our buildings meet the expectations of our clients.

“In my line of work, it’s key that we work closely with our partners and clients to create designs that reflect the latter’s needs. This is even more important for complex projects. Take the modular barn surgical theatre we’re delivering for Maidstone Hospital as an example: a highly specialised medical space that features an open-plan surgical area. Keeping the environment sterile was essential and we ensured this by designing in partitions and HEPA filtration to limit cross-contamination.”

What’s your area of expertise? How does this inform compliance at Premier Modular?

Annelee Roscoe: “Coming from a background in manufacturing and HR, it’s clear to me that creating a high performing, compliant workforce is about give and take. You can’t expect people to deliver their best every time without taking their wellbeing and development seriously. Training, mentoring and supportive management all contribute to the dedication our people show toward compliance.”

Darren Brooks: “Managing and developing offsite designs for over two decades means interpreting a client’s desires into a finished product is second nature. It’s my job to apply the best practice approaches I’ve acquired to ensure our design teams are tuned into all client needs.”

Nathalie Meunier: “Over 25 years, I’ve developed offsite construction portfolios internationally, from the UK to Ghana, spanning a number of markets, including education, defence, healthcare, commercial and industrial. I’ve observed building regulations and sector-specific policies evolve and know that strong compliance always requires an informed, driven team of great people. I utilise all of my experience to guide the permanent division and help to elevate our commitment to excellence.”

What’s the secret to a strong compliance culture?

Darren Brooks: “In design, compliance is a listening exercise first and foremost. If you know what and why a building needs to be structured in a certain way or include specific features – from the layout of medical rooms to acoustic ceiling tiles – you can shape a design around client needs and consider the wider regulatory limitations that will impact this early in the process.”

Nathalie Meunier: “There is no secret really. It’s about putting in the groundwork and keeping a close eye on regulatory change at both central government and sector-specific levels. Compliance is also about staying abreast of the issues affecting our clients and making sure we produce solutions that match their requirements.”

Annelee Roscoe: “Taking a people-first approach and identifying any barriers to compliance within a workforce is necessary in any context. Compliance requires procedures and specifications to be followed accurately and consistently to achieve work in a correct and safe manner for the best outcomes. People need to fully understand the boundaries they are working within for this to happen.”
